Exercise in Parental Lightening-Up

The kids went over to their buddies house to play, and CB lives close by so they get to ride their bikes. In an effort to lighten up as a parent, I let them ride by themselves for about half the way. I rode up to a point with them, and then stopped and watched them finish the trip. CB’s parents let her ride alone over here under the condition that she calls home when she arrives, which I thought was a great idea.

It helps that we live in a reasonably quiet area, and that I could see them until the turned onto the actual road that their friend lives on. The kids loved it because it gave them the exhilarating feeling of independence that kids hunger for. Of course, they forgot to call us, even in lieu of the fact that I reminded them constantly, much to their irritation. We ended up calling over there, even though we knew everything would be fine. It’s just a parental neurosis thing.

It just goes to show you, kids will be kids. Until the next time, thanks for reading, and thanks to OldOnliner for the pic.
