Rainy Day Activities

As the saying goes, be careful for what you wish for. We had this awful dry spell, after an awful winter, and I kept hoping for some rain to dampen things down a bit. Sure enough, the rains came, and they haven’t left. We’ve been getting soaked, not to the point of last summer, but it’s been a pretty good stretch. On the bright side, things are getting really green.

The weather has put a damper (no pun intended) on outdoor activities, however, including track and lacrosse, though lacrosse seems to ignore the weather. They play in hurricanes. A couple of days back it was rainy again, and we decided to hit the big city and see a movie. The plan was to run some errands, see a movie, hit the library to return and stock up on books, then have supper with mom. I love that sort of plan.

We went to Pirates at Lebanon Multiplex, and even though I’m not a huge fan of that theater, it seems to have mellowed a bit. There was always something mean and unfriendly about that place. The big sign says they’ll confiscate your food if you bring it in from the outside, and I saw it happen. One family snuck in all these snacks and the mean attendant came over and took it all away, making a big scene in the process. I came away from it thinking I’ll never come back here again.

The problem is, when it comes to kid’s movies, your choices are limited. I much prefer the Nugget, but they don’t always have the cool new releases. Plus, they don’t do the matinee thing as much, so we opted for Leb. We were the only ones in the theater, but it was quiet and mellow, and we really enjoyed the movie. Pirates is made by the Wallace and Grommet people, and even though it’s not digital animation, there is something endearing about claymation. It moves a little slower, which I prefer, but maybe because they’re Brits, the humor is witty and thoughtful. If you can grasp the amount of work it must take to do the animation, you can appreciate it that much more.

After the movie, we headed over to the library where we saw our friends the Ms. A especially enjoys RMs company, so they got to chat, while N checked out the tech table. R came soon thereafter and we chowed at Boloco, brown rice, whole wheat tortillas, and all.

It turned out to be a really nice day, and all on a whim. Don’t you love when that happens?

Until the next time, thanks for reading, and thanks to Nicolas Valentin for the pic.
